Wallaceburg Wins Championship Rematch Over UCC
After losing last year’s Senior Football final to the UCC Lancers, Wallaceburg’s 17-16 win Friday night was a sweet revenge for the WDSS Tartans.
With touchdowns from Lee Purnell, who was an OFC player of the week this summer for the Chatham-Kent Cougars, and Josh Stokes, the Wallaceburg Tartans jumped out to a 14-0 lead at the half, but the Lancers fought back to make it a close game.
Max Fantuz scored a 51-yard touchdown on a reception from Lancers quarterback Luke Allin. Allin also tossed a 13-yard pass to Spencer Mihalco for a touchdown near the end of the game.
It was turnovers however, that sunk the Lancers, with Stokes’ TD coming off an interveption, Wallaceburg’s Dan Fox picking up two interceptions, and Purnell, Jonah Pataki, and Jack Cavanaugh recovering fumbles for the Tartans in the game.
Troy Babcock had the other Wallaceburg touchdown and kicked the game winning field goal, a 35-yard shot in the third quarter.
Wallaceburg will next play the Chatham-Kent Secondary School Golden Hawks, while UCC plays John McGregor next week.
In other Senior Football action, the Blenheim Bobcats defeated the John McGregor Panthers 8-6.
