When the Windsor Lancers take to the football field this September, Chatham’s Cody St. Pierre hopes he will be playing a serious role in the Lancers’ attack after sitting on the sidelines last year as a true freshman.

According to Windsor Lancers Head Coach Joe D’Amore, the school is expecting St. Pierre to find his groove in his second season, “Cody is going into his 2nd year with the Lancers. He has had a great off season and we are excited to see him blossom in 2012. He is very athletic and smart. We know he will have a chance to compete for playing time.”

St. Pierre, who is starting spring camp this week with the Lancers, knows he has a long summer ahead of training and studying to gain the edge he needs to find a regular place on the deep Windsor Lancers roster,

“Over the summer I will be preparing myself physically and mentally by studying the playbook and hitting the gym once, maybe twice a day. As a young student athlete, I have to work hard in order to not only stay at a certain level capable of keeping up at this level, but to exceed certain limits and to stand out to put some minutes on the gridiron.”

To reach the level needed, St. Pierre is expecting long hours in the gym. Although he admits there are other, more talented players on the roster, the John McGregor Secondary School grad believes his work ethic will set him apart this season,

“The weight room and the football field are pieces in my life that help me get through my day. I know there are kids that are more gifted to a certain extent, but my dedication, passion, commitment and desire to play the game is an individual want, and will help the preperation process.”

The Human Kinetics student also spoke of the benefits of playing for the local Chatham-Kent Cougars club leading up to his recruitment to the OUA’s University of Windsor Lancers,

“Playing for the Chatham-Kent Cougars was a huge preperation process in getting ready for playing at the OUA level. It taught me more than just the basics of running a route, catching, and more advanced plays. My coaches helped me get prepared by having confidence in me and my ability and taught me that it’s more than just a physical game, it’s a mental game more so, especially at the OUA level.”

The journey for St. Pierre and his Windsor Lancers teammates begins again this week as they start their spring camp. St. Pierre will be joined this Fall by three other Chatham-Kent Cougars alumni JereMiah Hamilton, Jordan Deneau, and Mike Nicholson.

The Windsor Lancers will open their season on Labour Day, Monday, September 3 at home against the Ottawa Gee Gees.
