The Ottawa 67s selected former Chatham-Kent Cyclones superstar Travis Konecny first overall in the OHL Priority draft Saturday.

Konecny, who is from Clachan, Ontario, near Highgate, moved from the Chatham-Kent Cyclones to the Elgin-Middlesex Chiefs a few seasons ago and has been the OHL’s top prospect all season.

Konecny topped the Alliance AAA scoring charts with 31 goals and 35 assists in only 27 games.

The 67s bypassed Sean Day, a Michigan defender who was given exceptional status, for the pure scoring Konecny.

The OHL Selection Media Guide stated, “Travis is a very special player. He is a very explosive skater and has the ability to reach top speed in just a fewstride. Travis is the type of player you win championships with, not just because of his high end skill set, but because of howhard he plays every shift he is on the ice. Travis has one of the best shots at this age -it is very hard and accurate and
he releases it very quickly from all over the ice. He always wants the puck on his stick during a game and usually makes something happen when he has it. Travis hits like a tank and often catches players by surprise.”

The Ottawa 67s finished last overall in the OHL picking up only 16 wins in 68 games last season.

The past two first overall selections, Aaron Ekblad and Connor McDavid have gone on to win OHL rookie of the year honours.
