The Chatham-Kent Cougars Peewee Offensive Line has been collectively selected as the winners of the Chatham-Kent Cougars Player of the Week, sponsored by EnviroClean Car & Dog Wash, for the week ending July 21.

The Cougars Offensive Line, which helped the Peewee Cougars to a 33-19 victory over the Forest City Thunderbirds in the OFC Day of Champs this weekend, consists of Jacob Alderdice (left Offensive Tackle), Jacob Deneau (left Offensive Guard), Bennett Brown (Offensive Center), Seth Bowers (Right Offensive Guard), Garrett Stonefish (Right Offensive Tackle), Josh Dziver (Offensive Tackle and Guard), Cam Creechan (Offensive Tackle and Center), Lucus Miller (Offensive Tackle), Alex Sullo (Left Offensive Tackle), Matthew Kling (Offensive Center), and Khuen-Die Jung (Tight End).

Enviro-Clean-Car-Dog-WashThe offensive line was definitely the foundation to the Peewee Cougars’ offensive explosion this year. This group of players in the Peewee Cougars’ game against forest City, had over 500 yards total offense, with 5 touchdowns, 3 rushing and 2 passing.

“Our offensive line this year gelled as a group early on,” said Offensive Line coach Darcy Lunn. “They were big, athletic, aggressive and humble – all the qualities that make a line great. They were not only excellent football players, but great young men as well who were a pleasure to coach.”

The Cougars offensive line gave enough time for our quarterbacks Jonathan Cartier and Julian Ferrell to pass, and allowed the team’s running backs, Lucas Doyle and Ben Barnard, to run inside. The Cougars’ Offensive Line was so impressive this season, and in their final game of the season, the team ran concepts seldom seen at the Peewee level, like our Double QB shotgun formation, 6 wide receiver sets, and Pistol formation.

“Seth Bowers and Garrett Stonefish were our team captains this year and anchored our right side of our O-line,” stated Chatham-Kent Cougars President Selwyn Jordan. “Whenever we needed a big run or a big play, we ran it behind both our leaders with an isolation block or a cross block and they did not disappoint.”

“Bennett Brown was the glue to our offensive line at offensive center. We asked a lot from our center since we did a shotgun snap and pistol snap all year. Brown did not have a missed snap when he took over the center position in the middle of the season. Matthew Kling also played Offensive line early in the season and played very well before his injury,” continued Jordan.

“Jacob Alderdice was a pillar of strength at our Left Offensive Tackle position. He was the blindside tackle, and he did a great job blocking on all pass plays. He definitely used his long reach and size to his advantage to ward off defenders. Jacob Deneau made the transition from D-line to O-line extremely well. He is a smart player that caught on very well. He had good footwork and positioning and he stayed on his blocks well,” Jordan explained.

Alex Sullo had a excellent season. He finished strong and his future is bright as he returns for Peewee next year. Josh Dziver was able to play every position on the offensive line and with his high football IQ and contact courage adapted well to whatever was thrown at him,” said Jordan. “Lucas Miller was our youngest offensive lineman, but held his own and showed a lot of potential this year and we are excited about his return next year.”

Cam Creechan was a start on defensive as a LB and our punter and kicker, but was our backup O-lineman that was a natural at the O-line position,” said Jordan. “There were a few games where Cam did not come off the field and definitely deserved the ironman honours. Finally, Khuen-Die Jung was an extension of our O-line at the Tight End spot. He allowed our ball carriers to make big plays on the outside with his seal blocks. If K.D. was successful, we generally had a strong day running and passing the football with his precision blocking,” Jordan explained about his strong defensive group.

The Chatham-Kent Cougars Peewee finished their season last week, with many players stepping up to the Bantam level next season.
