Maroons Fall In OT, Sharks Beat Blades
The Chatham Maroons had more chances than the visiting Sarnia Legionnaires Sunday night, but failed to pick up the win, falling 5-4 in overtime.
The team’s traded goals in the first two periods, with Sarnia striking first in each frame, followed by goals from Michael Verboom and Brayden Hopkins.
In the third period, the teams again matched each other with Chatham getting goals from Eric Palazzolo and Kyle Brothers, and the Legionnaires scoring twice to send the game to overtime.
It didn’t take long for Sarnia to end the game in OT, as Hayden Allen scored 1:07 in, sliding the puck by Chatham netminder Darien Ekblad.
Chatham travels to London this Wednesday.
In other Junior B action, Chatham’s Jay Ritchie and Ridgetown’s Bryan Boersma scored the only goals for the Lambton Shores Predators in a 5-2 loss to Strathroy. Muirkirk’s Steven Beenackers had an assist in the loss. As well, Lambton Shores has parted ways with Thamesville’s Dillon Liberty, who has joined the Dresden Kings.
In Blenheim, the Wheatley Sharks scored the first three and last three goals of the game to win a wild 7-4 game over the Blenheim Blades. As they did in their previous win, Wheatley used a balanced scoring attack with six different scorers.
To open the game, Thomas Virban scored for Wheatley, before the team’s special teams got going with a powerplay goal from Sebastian Kanally and a shorthanded goal from Jon Woelk. After pulling goalie Eric Stewardson in favour of Justin Pratt, the Blades showed signs of life. The team got goals in the first from Zach Horvath and Ryan Frizzell to close the gap to 3-2.
The Blades would tie the game 4-4 in the second period, after Cam Aitken and Kirk McKillop scored for Blenheim, and Austin Fontaine scored for Wheatley.
The third period however, would be all Wheatley, as Fontaine, Brendon Anger, and Cale Phibbs scored to give the Sharks the win.
