Local Sports Briefs: July 24, 2015
- Wallaceburg’s Emily Van Damme is 2-0 at the National Lacrosse Championships. Van Damme is playing for Team Ontario Jr Women’s squad. VanDamme backstopped Team Ontario to a 3-2 win over Alberta yesterday. Tanner Cole of Wallaceburg picked up three assists for the Team Ontario Bantam Boys team. Team Ontario beat Team First Nations 10-1.
- Bridget Carleton of Chatham will be leading Canada into battle at the FIBA Under-19 Women’s World Basketball Championships. Canada plays the United States in quarter final action today.
- Port Lambton’s Brendan Seys fired a 10 over par 81 at the Ontario Junior Boys Golf Championships. Seys who golfs out of Maple City Country Club is in 46th place.
- The Wallaceburg Warriors women’s fastball team scored seven times in the first inning as they held on to beat Inwood 7-5 in Lambton-Kent Ladies Fastball League play.
- In Junior baseball play the Chatham Diamonds beat Wallaceburg 17-2. Mark Vanrychenham led the way for the Diamonds with a grand slam.
- 14-year-old Jake Hooker of Chatham wants to give back. The race car driving phenom has offered to donate half of his winnings from this weekend’s action at South Buxton to the Chatham-Kent Children’s Safety Village. Hooker has won three features in a row in the Sport Stock class.
- Tate and Caleb O’Leary have taken Hooker up on his offer as they are donating half of their winnings to the Chatham-Kent Children’s Safety Village as well. The O’Leary boys will be a little lighter on the top as they are cutting their hair for Cancer Research as well.
