Chatham Maroons rookie star Kevin Gursoy will take a major step up the hockey ladder for next season, as the LaSalle born forward has signed with the QMJHL’s Saint John Sea Dogs.

Gursoy, who was the GOJHL’s Western Conference rookie points leader with 30 goals and 62 points in 50 games, announced his signing on Twitter this week,

“Excited to announce that I’ve officially signed with the Saint John Sea Dogs of the QMJHL, thanks to everyone that helped me along the way.”

Named to the GOJHL Rookie All-Star team, Gursoy was also named Chatham’s Top Rookie, Top Academic Athlete in secondary school, and was the team’s top playoff scorer with 11 points in 9 games.

A product of LaSalle, Ontario, the 1999 born Gursoy signed with the Chatham Maroons after graduating from the Windsor Jr. Spitfires ‘AAA’ system.

The Saint John Sea Dogs won the QMJHL title last season, making the Memorial Cup in Windsor. They finished first overall in the QMJHL regular season as well, with a record of 48-14-5-1.

Gursoy marks the third significant player to leave the Maroons this week, as Teddy McGeen and Brendan D’Agostino both signed in the OJHL. Gursoy was Chatham’s second leading scorer. Their other top two scorers, Austin Thompson and Alec MacKenzie are both headed to play NCAA D3.
