Matt Mapletoft preparing for OUA playoffs
Wallaceburg, ON – Wallaceburg’s crowned Athlete of the Year Matt Mapletoft, will soon be forgetting his Wallaceburg Sports Hall of Fame induction honours, and focusing his attention on winning an OUA Curling Championship.
Although, Mapletoft has already helped his Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks team win an OUA, and National title, his focus for this season is the same, “OUA’s are coming up very soon, we are busy preparing for them everyday now,” said Mapletoft.
Last year, Mapletoft, as a member of Team Ontario, won a Canadian National Junior Curling gold medal, and also captured a bronze at the World Junior Curling Championships. Now, only a year removed from that experience, Mapletoft and his Laurier teammates are focusing on yet another OUA playoff run.
Mapletoft adds to the list of successful athletes from Chatham-Kent in recent months, and recognizes the significance of his hometown, and the recognition he has received from the Wallaceburg community, including his recognition at the Sports Hall of Fame ceremony,
“It was a great honor to win athlete of the year,” said Mapletoft, “a lot of good athletes that have come out of wallaceburg have won that before me.”
The OUA Curling Championships get underway February 17th in Guelph. Mapletoft and his Laurier team begin the Championship tournament facing the University of Toronto. The following day, Laurier plays the Univeristy of Western Ontario and Laurentian.
