Chatham Minor Hockey Takes "TekSavvy Cobras" Name Following $45,000 Donation
TekSavvy, one of Chatham-Kent’s leading corporations made a huge contribution to Chatham Minor Hockey, to the tune of $45,000 for jerseys and socks for all travel teams.
In return Chatham Minor Hockey has dropped their traditional “Maroons” moniker, and will now be known as the Chatham TekSavvy Cobras. The sponsorship deal is in place for at least the next three years.
In the early 1990’s when the Chatham-Kent Cyclones were originally formed, Chatham also offered travel hockey under the “Cobras” nickname, and now, the name has been brought back to life by TekSavvy.
At the 2010-2011 Chatham Minor Hockey awards night, TekSavvy CEO and Co-Owner Rocky Gaudrault was named Coach of the Year on the same night his company unveiled their new jerseys (pictured above) and details regarding the sponsorship deal. Gaudrault was the coach of the Chatham “AA” Major Novice Maroons team which captured an OMHA title this year.
The benefits of the sponsorship deal are expected to be passed on directly to Chatham Minor Hockey families in the form of a possible registration fee decrease.
In a way this is sad as the Maroons have been a historic part of Chatham. But good on this local business for stepping up to the plate with such a huge donation after the original sponsor wasn’t doing their part. I’m happy to see they respected tradition enough to keep the maroon colours even without the “Maroons.”
They used to be the Cobras before they were the maroons. And there was also the idiotic Micmacs logos.
