Blenheim Bobcats Defeat UCC to Win Kent Rugby Championship
Atlanta Flook had the winning try inside the first 2 minutes for the Blenheim Bobcats as they defeated the UCC Lancers 12-5 to capture the 2011 Kent Rugby title.
Starting the game, the Blenheim forwards caught the opening kickoff, off loaded twice, recycled the ball quickly from the first ruck and then the backs moved it wide to Flook, who scored the games winning try. Breanne Nicholas successfully converted for a 7-0 lead.
UCC put together some great phases using their forwards, but eventually spilled the ball or lost it in a ruck, which killed their opportunities. The icing on the cake for the Blenheim Bobcats was Breanne Nicholas intercepting a pass from the back of a UCC ruck and running it 95 metres to score under the posts making the score 12-0 for Blenheim.
The UCC Lancers were very effective in the scrums and in slow developing rucks, but the Blenheim defence played a strong game minimizing UCC’s opportunities.
According to Blenheim Bobcats head coach Brian Hall, he was happy with how his team played, but is now focused on his team’s SWOSSAA match next Wednesday, May 18 in Blenheim,
“I’m very proud of my girls, but now we have to move on and prepare for SWOSSAA,” said Hall.
