A group of concerned local parents have been inquiring with local league officials and media over a recent movement from the Ontario Hockey Federation which will remove body checking from House League hockey.

Starting next season (2011-2012), there will be no body checking at any age group of House League and House League Select hockey. In an attempt to clarify the rule, the OMHA released a statement saying that “the OHF ruling does not affect Local League hockey within the OMHA. The ruling applies to House League and Rostered Select only and will not impact current regulations for Local League.”

Meaning, local Tri-County leagues, such as those played in by house league hockey teams in Ridgetown, Dresden, Wallaceburg and other Chatham-Kent communities, will not be impacted by this ruling.

The ruling also stated that although the Ontario Hockey Federation would like to do away with body checking at the house league level, the ultimate decision regarding checking in local hockey programming remains under the control of the league administration.

Removing body checking in hockey, has been a controversial step or development attached to Hockey Canada’s Long Term Player Development model. This model aims to provide the best developmental opportunities for youth hockey players of all levels of skill and motor development. In the eyes of many in the hockey community, this means that participation at the house league level, should focus on skill development and active participation, rather than body checking.
