Wallaceburg Airhawks Find Silver Lining at OBA Provincial Championships
It was a bittersweet weekend for the Wallaceburg Airhawks this weekend as they took their game to Ottawa for the provincial championships, winning silver. The Major Midget Airhawks started the weekend off by losing to the Mississauga Monarchs (43 – 50) After beating the Guelph Phoenix (58 – 52) and Cambridge Centaurs (54 -49) they placed 1st in their pool. They then crossed over and beat the host team – the Glouster Wolverines (38-35).
That gave them the ticket to the Gold Medal game against London CYO. The Airhawks were heavily favored as they already had beaten London handily in a previous meeting. Despite outshooting London 3 to 1 the ball would just not fall for the Wallaceburg Airhawks. According to London’s coach London played their best game of the season.
The Airhawks won the silver medal and finished the season as the 25th best team in Ontario with a record of 30 wins and 15 losses. They won medals in every tournament they played in including two gold medals at Toronto tournaments. A season highlight was when they beat the Windsor Valiants in an exciting game at WDSS. The Valiants ended the season ranked 10th in Ontario.
The Wallaceburg Airhawks are coached by Tom Moynihan and Jeff Byrum and are grade 9 and 10 girls from 6 different Chatham-Kent High Schools. Results are listed below:
