67 Year Old Coach Hits RBI Single in Brewers Win
The Maple City Brewers went 2-1 in a double header against Wyoming on the weekend, followed by a game versus Petrolia Monday.
In Monday’s 10-1 Brewers win over the Petrolia Raiders, the Brewers were forced into an odd position. Due to short players they either had to forfeit the game, or put 67 year old coach, Wayne Tulloch into left field to play the game. Not only did Tulloch decide to play, he also hit an RBI single in the game making him possibly the oldest player to ever record a hit in Western Counties baseball. Tulloch had not taken to the field as a player since the 1960’s.
Joey Hewak pitched a complete 7 innnig game striking out 8 and allowing only 5 hits. Hewak went 3-5 and Brandyn Broadwood went 3-4 at the plate in the game as well.
In the first game of their Sunday doubleheader against the Wyoming Cowboys, Maple City lost 5-4. Matt Knights went 2-3 in the game with two singles, while Dave Carey went 2-4 with a single and a double.
The Maple City Brewers redeemed themselves in the second game of the doubleheader defeating Wyoming 11-1. Mike Verfaillie was 2-2 at the plate scoring 3 runs and adding 3 RBI’s, while Dave Carey was 2-3 with 2 runs and 2 RBI’s.
Carey also took the win on the mound going 5 strong innings allowing 3 hits and striking out 6.
Next games for the Maple City Brewers are Wednesday night in Wyoming, Friday night in Dresden, and Sunday in Amherstburg (CMBA tournament being held at Rotary Park this weekend).
What an awesome accomplishment!! Kudos to Coach Tulloch for doing it for the team!
That’s awesome! Way to go Wayne.
Ian, maybe you should do a focus article on athletes who are outside of the normal age range…
Great idea Brian! Do you have any older rugby players kicking around?
I think this story is fantastic though and I wonder if there are more people out there who are out of the “normal” age range still competing in sports locally. Who cares about the Brewers’ win (no offense guys), but when a 67 year old man steps in who hasn’t played competitive baseball in 50 years, and he hits an RBI single off someone likely a third of his age, that’s newsworthy.
We have a 55 year old man playing for our Sr Men. That puts him 15-20 years out of the normal age range.
He’s a better man than I.
