Chatham-Kent May Athlete of the Month: Breanne Nicholas
The Chatham-Kent Athlete of the Month for May 2011 is Breanne Nicholas, a multi-sport athlete from Blenheim District High School.
In May, Breanne was a driving force for her Blenheim Bobcats rugby team, and also as a member of the Blenheim track and field team. In the Kent semi-final rugby game, Nicholas scored 2 tries for the Bobcats and also kicked 4 conversions as Blenheim went on to defeat the CKSS Golden Hawks 38-0.
Nicholas continued to be a driving force for Blenheim in the Kent final against UCC defeating Lancers 12-5 in the game, with 7 of those points coming from Nicholas in the form of a try and convert.
In the days between the semi-final and Kent final rugby games, Breanne Nicholas claimed her greatest success of May 2011, being named Female Athlete of the Meet at the 2011 Kent Track and Field Championships.
Nicholas won each of the three events she was eligible to enter, taking 1st in Senior Girls Javelin, 400m, and long jump.
Earlier this year, Nicholas also grabbed a Kent title as the individual champion at the Senior Girls Cross Country meet.
Breanne Nicholas is a grade 11 student, who will return to Blenheim District High School next year.
Honourable mention for the award goes to Chatham-Kent Secondary School student Thomas Bednarik. Bednarik competed in May as a member of the CKSS senior boys soccer team, was the Co-Male Athlete of the meet at Kent Track and Field, eventually advancing to OFSAA, and was also award the Jack Parry Award June 9.
