Junior Cougars Fall Short in Final Minutes, Varsity Wins

The Chatham-Kent Cougars Junior Varsity team put 21 points up on the board in the first half and added another 9 in the second for a final score of 30 to 48 against the Sarnia Sturgeon.

Tanner Emery led the Cougars running game with 6 runs for 87 arwith a 61 yard TD . Emery also returned the ball twice for a total of 85 yards on kick off returns. Quarterback Cole Herman threw 2 touchdown passes to D’wan Mailloux for 15 and Ben Bartlett for 40. Mailloux ran for another 5 yards to the end zone, while Bartlett sprinted 41 yards for his touchdown.

Herman also ran the ball 2 yards in for a TD. Herman connected 5 times to Max Fantuz for a gain of 73 yards and twice to Emery for 17. Bartlett made all 4 one point conversions. Zach Bedford ran the ball back for 50 yards on 2 kick off returns and had 5 tackles on defence.

Cody Miller had 2 fumble recoveries and 2 tackles. Zach Goetghebeur also had a fumble recovery along with 5 tackles. Spencer Clarke led the defence with 7 tackles. Anthony Cunha had 4 tackles and a QB sack.

Next Sunday June 26th, Chatham-Kent will be hosting the Burlington Stampeders at the CKSS athletic complex. Game time will be 4:30 pm.

The Chatham-Kent Varsity Cougars reached a .500 (2-2) record Sunday June 19th with a victory over the Hamilton Panthers with a score of 37-29. The Cougars came out strong in the first half putting up 29 points, and holding on for the victory with a resilient Panthers team fighting hard in the second half.

Zach Welten and Chris Verrall both scampered in for touchdowns on the ground while other scores came from an interception return of 67 yards from Graham Smyth, a fumble return of 58 yards from Curtis Labute, and a punt return of 75 yards from Josh Wright to round out the balanced scoring effort.

Welton was also 3/12 and 4 interceptions in the air. Verrall led the Cougars with 61 yards rushing and Blayne Bechard added 51.

The defense was led by Graham Smyth who along with his 2 interceptions had 6 tackles and 44 return yards. Jeremiah Hamilton had 4 tackles and 2 pass deflections, and Josh Wright had 3 tackles to go with his 96 return yards.

Clark Green connected on all his extra points, had 2 singles, and gathered a total net kicking of 361 yards.

The Chatham-Kent Varsity Cougars will host the Burlington Stampeders this Sunday, June 26th at 1pm at the Chatham-Kent Athletic Complex.

Finally, the Peewee Cougars got off to a slow start Sunday. They battled a tough Sarnia Sturgeons offence and suffered a 38-7 loss. The Cougars defence was lead by Connor Wright with 9 tackles, Zach Lindley with 8 tackles and 1 fumble recovery. Brad Wild pitched in with 6 tackles, Anthony Atkinson and Chris Vercauteren each had 4.

On the offensive side, Dillon Beaumont had 11 carries for 93 yards and the only TD for the Cougars. Brad Wild had 6 carries for 60 yards and Colin Hoorelbeck with 5 for 35 yards. Special teams got Chatham on the board in the first half with a rouge (worth 1 point) made by Brad Wild with help from Anthony Atkinson and Connor Walsh.

The 2-2 Cougars face off against the 2-2 Kitchener-Waterloo Predators Sunday June 26th at the CKSS Athletic complex with a 10:30 am start.
