For one team, it was a day of firsts, for another, it was their chance to secure their hold of first place overall. Early in the day, the Kent Havoc Senior Girls team played their first ever regular season game losing to Waterloo 39-10. It wasn’t, however, according to coach Brian Hall a negative experience, as the team is just beginning their long road to finding success at the senior rugby level,

“I am very pleased with the ladies first effort, they kept the score reasonable, played very hard, and started that journey into Senior rugby.”

Kent Havoc tries in the game were scored by Jaleesa Russell and Brittney Ellerbeck.

For this fledgling team however, it was a day of firsts, including the first senior game for many of last seasons junior players, a first ever rugby game for one Havoc player, first game back to rugby for 4 players who took a couple years away from the game, and the first game together for the senior team that is composed of veterans, rookies, high school athletes from 3 different schools, different clubs and university players.

Despite the opening loss, Hall said he is anticipating big things to come for the Kent Havoc Senior women, “I am very proud of the progress that the Women’s program has made so far, and I looking forward to seeing what the Senior Women can accomplish this year.”

In the mens game, the Kent Havoc men captured first overall in their league starting the season with a perfect 3-0 record, defeating  Burlington 54-7 Saturday in Chatham.

Craig Arnel and Matt Waddick had two tries each, while Jarod Clogg, Matt Sutherland, Terry Crombez, Brad Bettencourt, Dave Buis, and Adam Kaufman had single tries. Arnel and Clogg also had conversions. Next Saturday, the Kent Havoc men travel to play another strong team in Kitchener.
