New Community Park Being Explored for Wallaceburg

A committee of community representatives has been formed to discuss and study a potential new community park to be located in Wallaceburg. Although exact details of the park are still in the planning phases, the park project is being described as a multi-purpose facility that will provide a variety of sports, recreation, and cultural opportunities and amenities.

Currently, several locations in Wallaceburg are being explored in consultation with local residents and the Municipality of Chatham-Kent. The proposed park will potentially feature a variety of sports and recreation opportunities for youth, adults, and seniors during summer and winter months, as well as a possibility for cultural events. Last Tuesday, the community park committee met with local government representatives to explain their intentions for the park and discuss the preliminary plans.

According to the community park chairman John Ritchie, this space is a potential way to build on an already strong sense of community in Wallaceburg, and to provide Wallaceburg residents with a safe place to come together, and lead healthy, active lifestyles,

“Wallaceburg has been yearning for a long time to be rejuvenated,” said Ritchie, “The research this committee is bringing to the table for possible implementation is a great opportunity to bring everyone together in our community to achieve a common goal, which will inevitably improve the quality of life for youth and adults in Wallaceburg and Chatham-Kent.”

In the coming months, including at a booth at the Wallaceburg Canada Day festivities, the committee will be seeking community input from Wallaceburg and area residents as to what features and amenities they would like to see in the potential new park. As well, the committee will be looking for community sponsors, fundraising partners, and is still welcoming interested residents to sit in on planning meetings and to help in the initial stages of this multi-phase project.

If you would like to participate as a member of the planning committee, as a volunteer, or as a sponsor, please email the committee at wallaceburgpark@gmail.com for more information.

It’s time to expand what Wallaceburg offers local people. An outdoor skating rink would be most welcome.

An outdoor skating rink would be great! Like the one in London. That will give us something to do in the winter months.

Nice to see that Merlin (pop 750) are having the grand opening of their new splash pad next weekend, and Wallaceburg (pop 10,000) is still arguing

What they need to do is take over the lot where Beaver Barn used to be and build a new twin pad sports complex and aquatics centre. The area is large enough and right between Murray and McNaughton. There would be space for other things like the splash pad, outdoor pool and outdoor rink people have mentioned.
