Ryan Jones Hits 20,000 Twitter Followers, Donates $5,000 to Charity
For most Twitter users, the social networking tool is a medium to share their lives 140 characters at a time. For Chatham’s Ryan Jones, who recently re-signed a 2-year, $3 million contract with the NHL’s Edmonton Oilers, he has used Twitter to connect with fans, and now, to donate to charity.
When Jones joined Twitter, he pledged that he would donate $5000 to charity when he reached 20,000 followers, a feat which he achieved last month.
“It just seemed like a fun way to get some followers and give back to a community that has given so much to me,” Jones told CKSN regarding his decision to donate $5,000 to an Edmonton charity when he reached 20,000 Twitter followers.
Jones, who talks about anything from hockey, to hunting, to his hair on Twitter, has become a fan favourite in Edmonton after he scored 18 goals last season, and has now endeared himself to the community further by donating his $5,000 to the Stollery Children’s Hospitol in Edmonton.
In addition to his $5,000, Jones’ Edmonton teammate Gilbert Brule agreed to match Jones’ contribution to the hospital making the total donation $10,000.
This is not the first time Jones has given to charity. Most noteably, Jones donated his hair, which is now as famous as his personality in Edmonton, to Locks of Love while he was a player at Miami University of the NCAA.
