Novice Golden Eagles Win Local Softball Tournament

The Chatham Golden Eagles Novice girls took part in the annual Summer Gold Tournament this past weekend winning gold.

Chatham won their first round robin game against Sheffield by a score of 7-3.  The winning pitcher was Hannah Roesch who pitched all five innings.  She allowed three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out two.  Sydnee Baker had three singles, Julia Stefanic and Carys Owen each had two singles, while Roesch, Madison Goodwin and Madison Vanrycheghem all had one single.  

The Chatham Golden Eagles then beat Highgate 24-8.  The winning pitcher was Sarah Vellinga who pitched one and one third innings of the mercy rule 3 inning victory.  Vellinga allowed two runs on one hit while striking out two.  Julia Stefanic pitched one and two third innings allowing six runs while striking out four and walking seven.  Stefanic had a double and two singles, Shayna Carey had a double and single, Vellinga had a double, and Roesch and Vanrycheghem each had a single. 

In Chatham’s next game, the team beat the Windsor Lady Expos-Red 7-5.  Winning pitcher was Sarah Vellinga pitching the first four innings allowing five runs on three hits and four walks while striking out three.  Roesch earned the save with a perfect fifth inning striking out one.  Vanrycheghem had two singles, while Owen, Goodwin, Carey and Kendra Goodwin each had one single. 

On Sunday morning, the Golden Eagles finished 4-0 in pool play by beating Windsor South Little League 12-0 in a three inning mercy.  Roesch picked up the win pitching a perfect first, Stefanic pitched the next two innings allowing only one hit while striking out three.  Baker had a double and single in the game, Roesch and Stefanic each had a triple, and Vellinga, Madison Goodwin and Carey all had singles.

The win put Chatham in first place for the playoff round where they would have to play fourth place Camlachie, a game in which Chatham won 10-3.   The winning pitcher in the victory was Roesch who pitched all six innings of the mercy rule victory.  Roesch allowed seven hits while striking out four. Carey had a double and two singles, Vanrycheghem had two singles, Vellinga had a double, and Roesch and Owen each had a single. 

This victory put the Chatham Golden Eagles in the gold medal game against the Windsor Lady Expos again, where they won 5-1 to capture the gold.  The championship winning pitcher was Sarah Vellinga who pitched all seven innings giving up three hits while striking out four.  Roesch had two doubles, Vanrycheghem had a single and double, and Vellinga had two singles, while Baker picked up a single.

This is the first time in in the five year history of this team, that the host Chatham Golden Eagles have won their home tournament.
