Wallaceburg Novice 1 Griffins Capture Zone 7 Title
The Novice 1 Wallaceburg Griffins headed into the weekend’s Zone 7 Lacrosse finals as the overwhelming favourites. Earlier this season, the Novice 1 Griffins, who finished the Zone 7 schedule with an 18-1-1 record, were upgraded to an ‘A’ rating in the Province, Wallaceburg’s first lacrosse team to achieve this mark in over 20 years. The team didn’t disappiont going undefeated on the weekend and capturing a Zone 7 title.
Saturday, the Wallaceburg Griffins Novice 1’s started the Zone 7 Championships by defeating the Sun County Crows 15-0. Brandon Ortibus recorded his first career hat trick in the game leading the Griffins to the win.
In the Semi-Finals, Wallaceburg beat the Sarnia Pacers 12-3. Cole Mackinnon, Riley Roe, Tanner Cole, Tyler Davis, and Evan Dumais all had two goals in the game, with Reece Dewagner and Seth Ewing scoring singles.
In the final, Wallaceburg faced a tough Windsor team, who the team played to close games all season, but the Griffins came out on top winning 8-5 in the final. Cole Mackinnon had an outstanding final scoring 4 goals, while Tanner Cole, the team’s leading scorer had 2 goals. Hunter Santsche and Tyler Davis added singles in the win. Malcolm Vandevenne was named the player of the game in the final as he was stellar in net for the Griffins.
The Wallaceburg Novice 1 Griffins are now preparing for Provincials August 5, 6, and 7.
