Local Basketball Players Bring Home National Gold
Bridget Carleton and Erica McFadden both won National Basketball Gold Saturday with their respective Team Ontario squads.
Carleton, who starred for the U15 Team Ontario entry at the Womens Basketball Canadian Championships, played over 27 minutes and scored 9 points for Team Ontario in their 76-59 gold medal win over Quebec. Carelton also pulled down 5 rebounds in the gold medal game.
Prior to the tournament, Carleton expressed her excitement to play for Team Ontario, a feeling that is undoubtedly holding true with a gold medal in hand, “Playing basketball at the provincial level is so exhilarating. Being on this team has led me to love basketball even more than I did before,” said Carleton.
In the U17 final, former Chatham-Kent Secondary School student Erica McFadden 4 points in the U17 final, helping Team Ontario to capture yet another gold, defeating British Columbia 80-41. McFadden’s Team Ontario entry was coached by Sarnia resident, and Wallaceburg District Secondary School teacher and coach Janine Day.
Team Ontario won all four U15 and U17 titles at the National Championships including two womens and two mens golds.
