Malott Stars at Eastern Canadian Championships
From his first pitch until his final at bat, Ridgetown softball player Stephan Malott was a standout at the Eastern Canadian Softball Championships.
In his opening game of the fastpitch championships, Malott who was picked up by the Kitchener-Waterloo Kolts after winning a provincial title with his Highgate Rock team, led his team to an 8-6 win over St. Leonard d’Aston Express. Malott was 3-for-4 at the plate with 2 runs and an RBI in the game.
Game two of the championships for the Kolts, Malott took to the mound pitching 5 strong innings to pick up the win in an 8-1 route over Mount Uniacke Mustangs. Malott struck out 13 in only 5 innings, and walk zero, while allowing only 2 hits and one run.
When the second day started, the Kitchener-Waterloo Kolts were unable to maintain their unbeaten record losing 7-1 to a strong Tavistock Athletics squad. Malott pitched less than an inning in the game coming in, in relief for starting pitcher Jeff St. Pierre. Later that day the Colts were able to get back on track defeating the Newfoundland Selects 4-3.
Malott took to the mound again on day 3 defeating Nova Scotia’s East Hants Expos 8-1. Malott pitched a complete game, allowing only 3 hits, while striking out 10 and walking none. Later in the day, Kitchener-Waterloo again picked up a win defeating William Moss 7-4.
Sunday, Malott started for the Kitchener-Waterloo Kolts but lasted only 2 innings pitching a no decision. Malott’s biggest contribution in the game was at the plate where he went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Unfortunately, the effort wasn’t enough as Malott’s team was eliminated 6-3 by the Newfoundland Selects.
Kitchener-Waterloo ended up 4th in the 7 team tournament, while fellow Ontario representatives Tavistock took home the gold.
