New Pro Basketball League Landing Just Down 401 From Chatham-Kent
Starting in November, Chatham-Kent residents will have an alternative to watching professional basketball in Toronto and Detroit, as London, Ontario has been awarded a franshise in the newly expanded National Basketball League of Canada.
For London, and all of Southwestern Ontario, this move marks the first true professional sporting franchise for the region, a move that NBLC president and CEO Andre Levingston says will have only positives for the local economy,
“They (London) truly understand what professional sport will mean for their local economy and for their community. If we receive the kind of support acrosse Canada that the city of London has shown us, I have no doubt that this will one day be the most successful league in North America and one of the best places to play in the world.”
For the first time, the London Knights, who feature two Chatham-Kent products, Seth Griffith and Dane Fox, as well as newly signed first round draft pick Bo Horvat who has ties to Chatham-Kent, will have a co-tenant for the John Labatt Centre.
Currently, the league is located on Canada’s east coast with franchises in Moncton, Quebec, Halifax, Saint John, PEI, Oshawa, and London. The league is seen by many as a place where players, who weren’t top picks to the NBA, can continue their basketball careers following college without travelling to Europe.
