Novice Golden Eagles Soar to Provincial Crown
This past weekend the Chatham Novice Golden Eagles took part in the Provincial Tournament held in Guelph. Friday night, Chatham beat Napanee by a score of 11-9. The winning pitcher was Hannah Roesch who pitched the first 6 and 1/3 innings. She allowed 8 runs on 7 hits and 2 walks while striking out 5. Sarah Vellinga got the save pitching the final 2/3 innings allowing one run on one hit and one walk. Aliyah Whiteye hit a home run and 2 singles, Kaley Veldboom, Maddy VanRycheghem, Shayna Carey and Carys Owen each had two singles and Sydnee Baker, Madison Goodwin, Roesch and Vellinga all had one single.
Saturday morning Chatham beat the Pickering Heat by a score of 9-1. Winning pitcher was Vellinga who pitched the complete game allowing one run on 5 hits while striking out 5. Veldboom had a double and three singles, Aliyah Whiteye, Baker, Madison Goodwin and Owen each had one single.
Saturday night Chatham beat Mississauga South West in a 10 inning game. There were 3 extra innings of the International tie breaker used. Chatham won 7-6 on a walk off hit by Baker who scored Veldboom from third base. In the 8th inning each team scored one run, in the 9th inning neither team scored, and in the 10th inning Mississauga scored one run while Chatham scored 2. Roesch pitched the first 5 innings allowing 2 runs on 6 hits and one walk while striking out 2. Vellinga pitched the final 5 innings allowing 2 runs (4 if you include the 2 runners put on for the International tie breaker) on 3 hits while striking out 2. Veldboom and Baker had 2 singles, Aliyah Whiteye and Madison Goodwin each had one single.
Sunday morning after a lengthy rain delay, Chatham beat the only other undefeated team, Desboro by a score of 8-4. Winning pitcher was Roesch who pitched all 7 innings allowing 13 hits while striking out 3. Madison Goodwin had a double and 2 singles, Aliyah Whiteye had a double, Vellinga had 2 singles and Veldboom and Roesch each had a single.
In the gold medal game, Chatham beat Desboro 8-5 after Desboro beat Mississauga South West (who were bronze medal winners) to get themselves back into the gold medal game. Winning pitcher was Vellinga who pitched the entire 7 innings allowing 5 runs on 9 hits and 3 walks while striking out one batter. Chatham fell behind 4-0 after 2 innings. Chatham then scored 2 runs in the 3rd. A three run homer in the fourth by Madison Goodwin put Chatham in the lead for good. Aliyah Whiteye and Madison each had a home run and a single, Veldboom and Baker each had a pair of singles, Vellinga had a triple and VanRycheghem and Roesch each had a single. Kaley Veldboom was named M.V.P. of the gold medal game scoring 2 runs on top of her two singles and 3 assists on defence.
