Maple City Brewers Grab Ontario Senior B Baseball Title
The Maple City Brewers dominated from start to finish at the Ontario Baseball Senior B Championships in Listowel Labour Day weekend bringing home a provincial title capped by an 8-1 win over Mitchell in the final.
To open the tournament, the Brewers faced Woodslee, defeating their local rivals 10-0. Dave Carey took the win on the mound striking out 8 in five innings of work, while allowing only 1 hit.
Ryan Cattrysse and Brandyn Broadwood were strong throughout the tournament starting in style, with Cattrysse hitting a single, and a two run homer in the win, while Broadwood smacked a three run home run and added a single.
In game two, the Brewers continued to ride hot bats beating Orangeville 11-5. Cattrysse hit a three run home run, while Dave Smith has two singles and a double. Later Saturday, facing host Listowel, the Brewers dominated yet again winning 10-1 with Denny Toth throwing 7 strong innings on the mound.
Scott McGuigan was named MVP of the Maple City Brewers’ 4th game, an 8-7 loss to Mitchell, hitting a solo home run, a double and a single. Joel Smith also had 4 singles in the game.
The Maple City Brewers were able to bounce back with ace pitcher Dave Carey on the mound as the Brewers edged Woodslee 4-2 in a defensive showdown. Carey pitched 7 innings, striking out 5 in the game. Broadwood and Joel Smith each had 2 singles.
In the championship game, a rematch against Mitchell, the only team who defeated them in the tournament, the Brewers rolled to a convincing 8-1 win. Carey pitched another complete game, while Cattrysse was named game star, lighting up the plate with a single and a two run home run.
Overall, the Maple City Brewers outscored opponents 50-17 en route to an Ontario Senior B Championship.
