Redemption MMA: Fusing Tradition, Respect, and Real Skill Training
Redemption MMA Owner and Head Trainer Chris Kimmerly has been training mixed martial arts skills for 28-years and has decided that now is the time to go for it and pass it on to others. He has come across many top teachers in his personal journey through the arts including Shawn Tompkins and Mark Hominick of the Adrenaline Training Center in London.
After dabbling with training fighters in his basement for upcoming mixed martial arts events, Kimmerly is set to go out full force and try to blend all he has learned to train youngsters in the many aspects of mixed martial arts and life.
“In mixed martial arts, everything is based of of traditional martial arts anyway, so I like to teach in a traditional way.” If you are wondering exactly what Kimmerly means by traditional teaching, he elaborates, “I like to teach the respect aspect of it. You know a lot of people think that mixed martial arts guys come in and they are just a bunch of thugs, you know full of tattoes that just like to beat people up. No, it’s all about respect, you have to respect everybody regardless.”
With the rapid growth and exposure that mixed martial arts in gaining right now, it is extremely important to have teachers and schools liker Kimmerly and Redemption to lay the proper groundwork and attitude before ever learning how to throw a punch or apply a submission hold. Martial Arts teaches you to be respectful of all those around you as well as rise above the violence that may sometimes seem necessary in society today. Mixed Martial Arts offers a sport and an outlet to test yourself in consenting competition.
Schools like Redemption, with the proper philosophy go a long way in teaching life skills such as discipline, self confidence, perserverance, and overall health and fitness. It’s not as much about punching and kicking as it is about learning life skills and meeting people who share the same interests.
Kimmerly was born and raised in Chatham, and has run across and learned from the best of the area in Tompkins, Hominick, and others at ATC. He is also brings in guest instructors from time to time to help him in ground training when he feels some specific skills need to be trained.
In being around Kimmerly at his gym while his fighters were there, you can see the mutual respect that is in place, and he is there to help and push individuals who want to be pushed to set and reach fitness and skill goals.
