Richmond Hill Downs Cambridge in NRL Showcase at Thames Campus

Ringette was on display Saturday in Chatham-Kent at Thames Campus Arena. Featuring two of the top teams in Canada, and a thrilling shootout, fans in attendance witnessed the speed and skills of the National Ringette League.

In the game, a National Ringette League regular season match up, the Richmond Hill Lightning defeated the Cambridge Turbos 4-3 in a shootout.

According to Richmond Hill coach Keith Jasper, his team his team didn’t execute to their fullest, however he was happy with his team’s performance, particularly his goaltender,

“Our goaltender Ashley Steele played amazing, like a rock, shut them down and gave us an opportunity to bury it.”

Cambridge’s Brittany Walden opened the scoring in the game, however Richmond Hill fought back with Megan Gibson scoring to even the game. Vanessa Cowlen again put Cambridge ahead in the back and forth contest before Elyssa Jasper scored for the Lightning to end the first half knotted 2-2.

Heading into the games second half, the teams again traded goals with Adryon Thompson scoring first for Cambridge, followed by Jessica Jones for Richmond Hill.

The final buzzer sounded with the game tied 3-3, sending the contest into a shootout. After numerous shooters were denied by Lightning goalie Ashley Steele, Lightning captain Beth Hurren put the game away scoring in the 5th round of the shootout. Hurren also had two assists in the game.

With approximately 400 fans in attendance, a loud Chatham crowd of Chatham Thunder players and ringette fans came together to show Chatham-Kent is a first class sports community, something that was not missed by Richmond Hill coach Keith Jasper.

“It’s a great facility, great people, great to see that many people in the stands, and it just shows that ringette is continuing to grow.”
