Wallaceburg Lakers Blow Three Goal Lead in Late Game Collapse
After looking like they had kicked their slow start, the Wallaceburg Lakers came apart late in the game Wednesday night against the Alvinston Flyers blowing a 3-goal lead to allow the Alvinston Flyers back into the game, eventually losing 7-5.
Alvinston couldn’t remain disciplined in the first period allowing Wallaceburg to jump out to a 4-1 lead at the end of the frame, including two powerplay goals by Wallaceburg.
Tyson Isaac opened the scoring for Wallaceburg on the powerplay, assisted by Shawn Lubbers. After Alvinston tied the game 1-1, rookie forward and Wallaceburg resident Troy Babcock scored to put the Lakers ahead. Half a minute later, Jordan Durston added to the Wallaceburg Lakers lead.
Before the first came to an end, Thomas Mertz scored on the powerplay, assisted by Isaac and Dustin Cope putting the Lakers up 4-1 after one.
After Alvinston pulled one nearer on a Jake McPhail unassisted powerplay goal, Tyson Isaac answered back for Wallaceburg with his second goal of the game. Following Isaac’s goal however, the Lakers started to collapse allowing 5 unanswered goals.
Alvinston scored 3-goals in less than two minutes near the end of the second period to tie the game 5-5, and continued their enslaught as the third began scoring two more goals. Wallaceburg couldn’t rally late giving Alvinston the 7-5 win. Reid Rankin stopped 26 shots in goal for the Lakers in the loss.
Wallaceburg now travels to Belle River Friday night before welcoming Wheatley to town next Wednesday.
