Wallaceburg Skating Club Launches Local Fundraiser

October 11, 2011 – Instead of chocolate bars and cookie dough, the Wallaceburg Skating Club is taking a different approach to fundraising this fall. The WSC will be supporting local businesses while raising the money they need to keep their skaters on the ice thanks to a new fundraising partnership with the Shop Local CK program. WSC members will be selling Shop Local CK cards this October, a venture WSC president Randi Hull says her club is excited about,

“We were looking for a unique way to fundraise this year, and the Shop Local CK program offers good value for our club. Our skaters and their parents will be working hard to sell as many cards as possible for the next two weeks.”

The Wallaceburg Skating Club is approaching this fundraising effort from a unique angle, offering a custom competition skating dress from Gillian King at www.myskatefashions.com to the skater who raises the most money. Fundraising will officially begin on October 11th, and skaters will have until October 27th to sell as many Shop Local CK cards as possible. According to Shop Local CK founder Chantielle Kennedy, selling the cards as a fundraiser is a great way for local teams and organizations to raise the funds they need, while supporting the local economy,

“The Shop Local CK fundraising program gives teams and clubs an innovative opportunity to raise funds and help offset their operating costs. People who buy the cards are then supporting the local economy, and can quickly earn back their investment through the savings they receive at participating businesses.”

For every card sold during this limited time fundraiser, the Wallaceburg Skating Club will receive $15, compared to smaller amounts per sale received through other fundraising options. As well, for each card sold, Shop Local CK will donate an additional $1 to the United Way of Chatham-Kent.

“With declining enrolment, most skating clubs in Chatham-Kent are struggling, and ours is no different,” remarks Hull. “We hope this fundraiser will give us a fighting chance to keep providing quality programming to local skaters. We’re going full force over the next two weeks to sell the Shop Local CK cards. With the number of local businesses participating in this program, I think it will be an easy initiative for people to support in the community.”

Roughly 30 Wallaceburg businesses are currently enrolled in the Shop Local CK program. Consumers who present their Shop Local CK loyalty card at participating retailers are entitled to exclusive savings and discounts. More than 60 businesses across Chatham-Kent currently honour the program.

The Wallaceburg Skating Club has 45 enrolled skaters, some of whom participate in competitions across Southwestern Ontario.
