Chatham Maroons Destroy the Sarnia Legionnaires
Discipline and domination. Sunday in front of a loud home crowd, the Chatham Maroons destroyed the Sarnia Legionnaires 7-2 to snap a two game losing streak.
While the Sarnia Legionnaires took the first nine penalties of the game, the Chatham Maroons were able to stay out of the penalty box and use that momentum to build a big lead over the higher ranked Legionnaires. Brennan Feasey and Sean Myers proved to be the veteran scoring presences the Maroons need in the first period as they got Chatham out to a 2-1 lead after the first period.
To start the second period, Chatham scored four straight goals with Sam Studnicka, Michael Verboom, Blake Blondeel, and Feasey putting the home team ahead by 5 goals. Sarnia scored once before the end of the second to make the game 6-2 heading into the third.
On the powerplay again to open the third period, Evan Mascaro scored from Studnicka. New Maroons defenseman Burke D’Souza then got on the board with his first of the season in a Chatham uniform after joining the team earlier this month from the Leamington Flyers.
With less than two minutes to go in the game, Chatham’s Marco Canzoneri took his team’s first penalty of the game, and Sarnia’s Justice Dundas capitalized to make the score 8-3. That’s the way the game would end, as Maroons goalie Hunter Johnson shut the door, picking up the win.
