Chatham Maroons Double Up on Sarnia Legionnaires
In front of a home crowd of more than 600, the Chatham Maroons doubled up their Highway 40 rivals, the Sarnia Legionnaires 6-3 Sunday night. The win was a big one for the Maroons as the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League Western Conference standings are ever tightening.
Captain Sean Myers lead the Maroons with two goals and an assist in the win. Michael Verboom, who seems to have found his scoring touch again after slumping early in the season, also had two goals and an assist.
Another veteran, Brennan Feasey had a goal and an assist in the win. Blake Blondeel had a four point performance scoring once and adding three assists. The veteran leadership for the Maroons is a welcomed sign after assistant captain Troy Cox was lost, perhaps for the season, with a broken knee cap.
Verboom, Feasey, and Myers all scored in the third period to bust the game open after being tied 3-3 after two frames.
After finding himself on the bench for several of the Chatham Maroons recent games, last year’s starter Connor MacKinnon was solid in net making 25 saves in the win.
Each of Sarnia’s goals came on the powerplay from Derek D’Andrea, Daniel Nikandrov, and Justice Dundas.
Chatham will travel to Lasalle Wednesday night before welcoming Leamington to town Sunday.
