Shelton Scores Twice as Dresden Kings Edge Flyers

The Dresden Kings held on to a narrow 4-3 win Friday night at Lambton-Kent Memorial Arena in Dresden over the Alvinston Flyers. James Shelton lead the Kings with 2 goals and an assist in the game.

Dresden fell behind 2-1 in the first period the the only Kings goal coming from Shelton, assisted by Dylan and Wendel Mertz.

The second period was all Dresden with underage AP Dillon Liberty kicking it off for the Kings. The goal was Liberty’s first in junior hockey. Liberty, a Thamesville resident and UCC student, is playing Major Midget ‘AAA’ hockey in Sarnia this season.

Shelton scored his second of the game to give the Kings their first lead of the game, assisted by Wendel Mertz and newcomer Jesse Allen.

Allen closed out the period scoring his first with the Kings this season. Allen played with the Jr. Kings in 2009-10 scoring 11 goals in 34 games. Last season Allen had 13 points in 38 games for the Chatham Maroons, and started the season with the Maroons this year, collecting 4 goals in 12 games.

Alvinston scored in the third period to make the score 4-3, however they could not complete the comeback. Brent Paxton made 33 saves in net collecting the win.

With the win, the Kings pull within 2 points of the Alvinston Flyers for third in the North Division standings.
