Tartans Win! Advance to SWOSSAA Football Final

After more than a decade drought without winning a Kent senior football title, the Wallaceburg Tartans are now one win away from a SWOSSAA championship after defeating the St. Christopher Cyclones in a cold and windy matchup Saturday afternoon in Wallaceburg.

The Tartans jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back finishing with a 35-1 win.

On the opening drive of the game, St. Christopher’s attempted a hook and ladder play which was fumbled. Wallaceburg then marched the ball down the field capped off by a Lee Purnell touchdown run.

Purnell, dominated on both sides of the ball in the game racking up several tackles in the first quarter alone. Purnell, who is a final year player with the WDSS Tartans scored his second rushing touchdown of the game to give Wallaceburg a 14-1 lead after a St. Christopher’s rouge.

Jonah Pataki continued his strong season scoring another Wallaceburg touchdown with just over five minutes remaining in the first half to give the Tartans a 21-1 lead. After a Troy Babock field goal, the Tartans took a 24-1 lead.

The final Wallaceburg touchdown of the game came on a long pass from Brayden Fischer to Josh Stokes down the sideline. After an odd angle field goal from Babcock, the Wallaceburg Dstrict Secondary School Tartans rode a 35-1 lead until the final buzzer.

Wallaceburg will now face Kennedy (Windsor) at the University of Windsor later this week. Game date and time has yet to be confirmed.
