Canadiens Trounce Lakers in Renewed Rivalry

For years, the Wallaceburg Lakers and Belle River Canadiens met annually in the Great Lakes Junior C finals.

Although Wednesday night’s game did not hold as much meaning, it was clear the rivalry is still alive as the Belle River Canadiens defeated Wallaceburg 5-2.

Belle River opened with a strong first period scoring three times. First period goal scorers were Nik Dobrich, Brandon Larocque, and Jason Koumaris.

To start the second period, the Wallaceburg Lakers charged back closing the score to 3-2 with goals from Justin Whitson and Scott Lubbers. After scoring twice in the first five minutes of the period, the Lakers would run dry for the remainder of the game.

With only 18 seconds remaining in the period, Belle River would shift momentum back in their way with a goal from Spencer BusKirk. In the third, Belle River added to their total midway through the period as Blake Jones put the game away.

Wallaceburg also lost one of their best scorers for potentially several games as Lakers leading scorer Tyson Isaac was assessed a match penalty for spitting.

With the recent surge from the once winless Kingsville Comets, the Wallaceburg Lakers now sit only 5-points ahead of the last place Comets.
