Chatham-Kent Sports Year in Review: April 2011
April is the month where local Junior hockey begins to wrap up, and a new season of high school and clubs sports is beginning.
Take a moment to look back at the highlights from Chatham-Kent sports in April 2011:
- April 1 – Dresden’s Wes Cunningham was named a First Team ECHL All-Star. Cunningham scored 7 goals and added 33 assists for the Greenville Road Warriors, he was also the runner up for league’s top defenceman. Read more about Wes Cunningham’s All-Star season here…
- April 4 – Wallaceburg’s Seth Griffith made huge steps in his hockey career last season, which was highlighted by his selection to Team Canada’s World Under-18 Hockey Championships roster. Read about Seth Griffith’s selection to play for Team Canada here…
- April 4 – The Wheatley Sharks fell to the Belle River Canadiens in game 7 of the Great Lakes Junior C Hockey League final. The underdog Wheatley Sharks were overpowered in the final game losing 4-1 in front of a packed crowd in Belle River. Read about the Great Lakes Junior C final here…
- April 6 – High school hockey handed out their top award for the season, the Fair Play award to male and female hockey players from across Chatham-Kent. The award goes to players from each school who exhibit a combination of skill, ability, and sportsmanship. Read about 2011’s Fair Play winners here…
- April 7 – The Chatham-Kent Cougars handed out their top awards last April, including to several players who were graduating to the University ranks. Read about the Chatham-Kent Cougars award banquet here…
- April 8 – The high school football season got underway, with several fantastic Junior games on the schedule. CKSN also captured a number of images from the opening game between the UCC Lancers and JMSS Panthers. Read more about the KCSSAA junior football season and see photos here…
- April 11 – Chatham’s Ryan Jones received one of the biggest honours in his NHL career being put forward as the Edmonton Oilers Bill Masterton Trophy nominee for the 2010-2011 season. Read about Jones’ season and his Masterton nomination…
- April 11-16 – In a string of Junior B hockey moves, Wallaceburg Lakers head coach Mark Davis is announced as the new head coach of the Lambton Shores Predators, while Blenheim’s Brett Hope wins a Western Conference GOJHL title with St. Thomas. - April 20 – Chatham’s Derek Whitson and Wallaceburg’s Seth Griffith were on the ice representing Team Canada. Whitson at the World Sledge Hockey Challenge and Griffith at the World Under-18 Hockey Championships. Read about Derek Whitson and Seth Griffith here…
- April 21 – As Whitson and Griffith were representing Canada, another Chatham-Kent product, Jamie Schaafsma was busy representing the Netherlands at the World Hockey Championships. Read about Jamie Schaafsma playing the Netherlands here…
- April 23 – Following a large corporate donation, the former Chatham Maroons minor hockey system, renamed itself as the Chatham TekSavvy Cobras. TekSavvy donated more then $40,000 to the organization for new jerseys and socks. Read more about TekSavvy’s donation to Chatham Minor Hockey here…
