Chatham-Kent Sports Year in Review: March 2011
After a furious February, March continued to deliver big sports moments in Chatham-Kent. From a major upset in Great Lakes Junior C hockey action, to high school teams heading to OFSAA, and much more, March was memorable for sports in Chatham-Kent.

- March 1: Ridgetown emerged as a big time curling force, despite their small school population by winning a SWOSSAA curling championship and advancing to OFSAA curling in Sudbury. Read more about Ridgetown’s SWOSSAA curling win here…
- March 4: Wallaceburg’s Jack Cavanaugh won an unprecedented OFSAA swimming gold medal in the butterfly. The gold was Wallaceburg’s first ever swimming OFSAA gold. Read about Jack Cavanaugh’s OFSAA gold medal performance here…
- March 8 – After putting up a valiant fight against the first place Strathroy Rockets, the Chatham Maroons were eliminated in game 6 of their opening round Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League series. Read more about the Chatham Maroons playoff series here…
- March 11 – With two senior girls volleyball teams, CKSS and the John McGregor Panthers competing at OFSAA volleyball, it was the top ranked JMSS team that came home with a bronze medal. Read about JMSS’ OFSAA volleyball bronze here…
- March 14 – Former UCC Lancers basketball star and Wallaceburg resident Deanna Kerkhof was named to the CAA All-Academic team. Kerkhof played for the Northeastern University Huskies. Read more about Deanna Kerkhof here…
- March 14 – Steven Sinclair of the Chatham Skating Club won a provincial skating title in Mississauga. Sinclair represented the Chatham Skating Club in the Starskate Silver Senior Men’s division. Read about Steven Sinclair’s provincial skating championship here…
- March 14 – Chatham’s Derek Whitson captured gold with the Canadian Sledge Hockey team at the Japan Para Sledge Championship. During the tournament, Whitson and the rest of Team Canada experience the massive earthquake that devasted Japan. Read more about Derek Whitson’s gold win with Team Canada…
- March 15 – In an incredible upset, the Wheatley Sharks defeated the Wallaceburg Lakers sending the first place Lakers home, while the Wheatley Sharks advanced to the Great Lakes Junior C finals. Read more about the Wheatley Sharks series win here…
- March 19 – The Chatham Maroons Major Novice ‘AA’ team took home an OMHA title after defeating Grimsby on home ice in front of a packed crowd at Thames Campus Arena. Chatham won the game 5-1. Read more about Chatham’s OMHA title here…
- March 22 – Ex-Chatham Maroons player Tyler Roeszler of Chatham played his last NCAA hockey game with the Cornell Big Red. Roeszler enjoyed a solid 4-year NCAA career. Read more about Tyler Roeszler here…
- March 27 – Chatham’s Brad Houston became the second local NCAA hockey player to see his career come to an end in a week. Houston, who played for the Adrian College Bulldogs lost his final game, the NCAA National Championship game as his team lost the final 4-3. Read more about Brad Houston and his NCAA run here…
