Chatham-Kent Sports Year in Review: September 2011
The beginning of Fall marks the opening of hockey season, as well as the return of high school sports. September started and ended with negative stories about two Chatham-Kent sports heroes being cut by teams, however both would eventually re-emerge in prominant roles at the professional ranks.
Here is a look at sports in Chatham-Kent from September 2011:
- September 2 – Chatham’s Andy Fantuz saw his NFL dreams come to a close as a new month rolled in after he was released by the Chicago Bears. Fantuz was barely utilized in his preseason action with the Bears, however he did successfully complete each catch that was thrown his way. Read more about Andy Fantuz and the Chicago Bears here…
- September 6 – It was one big weekend for Chatham baseball in early September seeing multiple teams, at opposite ends of the age spectrum win provincial titles. The Minor Misquito Chatham Diamonds won an OBA title, as did the Maple City Brewers.
- September 7 – Wallaceburg lacrosse graduate Sean Pollock was traded from the Minnesota Swarm of the NLL to the Colorado Mammoth. Pollock played 7 seasons of professional lacrosse in Minnesota. Read more about Sean Pollock’s trade…
- September 7 – It took less than a week for Andy Fantuz to find a football home, and it was a familiar one at that as last season’s Most Outstanding Canadian returned to the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League. Read about Andy Fantuz’ return to the CFL…
- September 12 – In a show of community support, local athletes from several organizations including the Chatham Maroons, Wallaceburg Lakers, Tiger Paw Martial Arts, Blenheim Blades, CKSS Golden Hawks, WDSS Tartans, Chatham-Kent Cougars, and TekSavvy Cobras cames together to support the Chatham-Kent Womens Centre by raising $4,335 for the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes campaign. - September 16 – The Chatham Maroons picked up their first win of the season, a 3-2 nailbiter against the Lambton Shores Predators. Watch the video highlights of the Chatham Maroons first win…
- September 18 – The Great Lakes Junior C season got underway with the Wallaceburg Lakers dropping a pair of home openers, first losing to the Blenheim Blades at their home opener, followed by dropping their home opener to the Dresden Kings only nights later.
- September 27 – Dresden’s TJ Brodie was cut from the Calgary Flames before stepping on the ice for a preseason game, less than a year after playing 3 regular season games after making the Flames roster out of training camp.
