Ashley Glassco of the Chatham Figure SKating Club, competed this past weekend in Regina, Saskatchewan at the 2012 Skate Canada Challenge, her first national competition. There were over 500 skaters from across Canada, vying for the top spot in Pre-Novice, Novice, Junior and Senior categories. The top skaters in Novice, Junior and Senior will advance to Canada’s 2 other National Competitions. Glassco qualified to compete at the Challenge when she received the Bronze Medal at the Western Ontario Sectional Competition in November.

Glassco received 21.72 in her short program and 38.28 in her long freeskate program, giving her an overall total score of 60.00. This score gave her a placement of 31 out of 52 skaters she competed against in Pre-Novice ladies from all over Canada.
The Gold Medal and Pre-Novice Crown, was won by Julianne Delaurier from the British Columbia/Yukon Territory Section.

She didn’t do too bad considering (at this point), she was competing against skaters form BC and Quebec who attend “SKating Schools”, ( a couple schools in the GTA also!). Their entire curriculum is based around a skating program. Some can spend 3-4 hours a day on the ice 5 days a week, all encompassed within their education. It is hard to compete with that, but there have been some small town skaters who have made it to the top!
