Mertz Lifts Kings to Big Win Over Alvinston
Dylan Mertz had two goals and added two assists in a big 6-1 win over the Alvinston Flyers Friday night, both teams last game before the Christmas break.
Both teams failed to get on the board in the first period, before Mertz broke the scoreless tie midway through the second period. It would be all Dresden from there in, as Brennan Rainey and Mertz scored again before the second period ended to give the Kings a 3-0 lead. Mertz’ second goal, assisted by Macks Holmes was a shorthanded marker.
Holmes then opened the third period with a goal of his own just over a minute into the frame. Dillon Liberty of Thamesville scored next for the Dresden Kings giving his team a dominant 5-0 lead.
Although he made 33 saves in the win and was voted the game’s first star, Dresden goalie Brent Paxton couldn’t hold onto his shutout as Kyle Cutler scored for Alvinston. Chad Phillips would score again for Dresden before the game was over to cap of the Kings 6-1 win.
Former Wallaceburg Lakers goalie Reid Rankin took the loss in net for the Alvinston Flyers.
Dresden enters the break with a 12-14-2 record sitting 4th in the North Division.
