Chatham's Adriano Deabreu commits to Western Michigan

Chatham’s Adriano Deabreu has committed to play NCAA Division I soccer at Western Michigan University.

“It’s definitely a great feeling,” Deabreu, a former UCC Lancers student, said about committing to the Western Michigan Broncos soccer program, “It’ll be a new challenge for me, and give me the opportunity to play against some top class competition in the MAC conference including the 2010 NCAA division 1 national champions Akron Zips who also belong to the MAC.”

Last season, Deabreu played goalkeeper for the NJIT Highlanders of the Atlantic Soccer Conference, while also playing club soccer with the Winstars Soccer Academy in Vaughan, Ontario.

Deabreu said he is hoping to build off the experience he gained playing at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) and to earn a chance in net with the WMU Broncos, “NJIT provided me with some good Division 1 experience, having registered 8 starts last year, so I’m hoping I’ll be able to work toward a starting goalkeeper spot at Western Michigan right off the bat.”

As a member of the UCC Lancers, Deabreu backstopped his team to OFSAA in 2009, recording 19 shutouts in 24 games. The fact that Western Michigan is much closer to his hometown of Chatham than NJIT, didn’t escape Deabreu either, “Being that Kalamazoo is much closer than Newark, New Jersey it’ll also be nice to have my family able to see me play on a regular basis.”

In a release by Deabreu’s club team Winstars Academy, Director Bob Graham praised the young goalkeeper saying, “Adriano was an excellent goalkeeper in our academy and we are very happy for him.”

The appreciation was mutual, with Debreau giving credit to Graham and the Winstars Academy, “My former club coach Bob Graham of the Winstars Soccer Academy has been very helpful throughout the entire process, and I feel extremely blessed to have such a great opportunity ahead of me.”

Last season, the Western Michigan Broncos finished with a 6-12-3 record with a 2-2-2 record against conference opponents.

Excited to see. Lots of talent comes through the NCAA ranks and contributes to MLS/NASL teams.

Hopefully we can see him suit up for Stephen Hart in 4 years.
