Kings Hault Lakers Comeback With Shootout Win
It looked like the Dresden Kings had Wednesday’s game well in hand with a 3-1 lead heading into the third period, however the Wallaceburg Lakers fought back sending the game to a shootout. Wendel Mertz and Alex Scmidt scored in the shootout to hault the Lakers comeback and lift the Dresden Kings to a 4-3 win.
Jordan Durston kicked off the scoring early in the first period for Wallaceburg, with assists going to Justin Whitson and Jeff Nolfo. Dresden, who has been hot of late, showed off their balanced offense over the next 30 minutes with goals from Cody McPhail, Josh Beatty, and Alex Schmidt.
In the third period, the Wallaceburg Lakers skated out like a different team. Nolfo pulled the Lakers within one less than 30 seconds into the period, before Tyler Williams scored only two minutes later to tie the game.
Devin Cove for Wallaceburg, and Brandon Funk for Dresden then shut the door keeping the scored tied through the final buzzer and overtime.
In the shootout, after Mertz scored for Dresden, Mike Myers responded for Wallaceburg, Alex Schmidt ended the game for the Kings.
With less than 5 games remaining in the season, the Dresden Jr. Kings are currently lined up to play the Blenheim Blades in an opening round series.
