Warming up before a game or practice is vital to ensure optimal performance as well as to avoid injury.

There are three main components to a hockey warm up; Cardio, game related drills, and stretching.

The cardio portion of the workout includes light to medium skating. Moderate cardio increases the blood flow to our muscles, warming them and preparing them for the work ahead. By preparing our muscles for the workout, we reduce the risk of injury.

Game related drills prepare the muscles used in the actions we are performing such as shooting and passing.

When it comes to stretching, it is important to perform active stretches as opposed to static stretches to ensure optimal power in the game. Instead of stationary stretches where you hold the pose, active stretching involves more movement such as leg swings and arm circles. If however, the athlete has a pre-existing injury, static stretching on the injury may be beneficial.
