Chatham’s Doug Melvin elected to Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame

Chatham native and current General Manager of the Milwaukee Brewers, Doug Melvin has been elected into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame.

Melvin will be inducted on along with former Major League players Rusty Staub and Rheal Cormier, and the Team Canada squad who are the reigning gold medalists from the 2011 Pan Am Games .

The induction ceremony is set for June, 23 in St. Mary’s.

The Canadian Hall stated in a release Melvin is “Chatham, Ontario’s second most famous baseball person, behind Hall-of-Famer Fergie Jenkins.”

Melvin has held the GM spot with the Brewers since 2002.

He had a short lived pitching career in the minor leagues from 1972-78 with Pittsburgh and the New York Yankees.

After his playing days he held the following positions:

  • Baseball operations assistant with the Yankees in 1983-‘84
  • Scouting director with the Yankees in 1985
  • Special assistant to general manager in 1987 with the Baltimore Orioles
  • Assistant GM and director of player personnel from 1988-‘93 with the Orioles
  • and GM from 1994-2001 with the Texas Rangers

Melvin has also received accolades for his work, most notably being named Baseball Executive of the Year in 2011 by Baseball America after the Brewers won a franchise-record 96 games, capturing the National League Central Division title.
