Fantuz to Hit Open Market in Two Weeks
While most will be celebrating Valentines Day in two weeks time, Saskatchewan Roughriders fans could be nervously waiting for an 11th hour contract for Chatham’s Andy Fantuz.
Fantuz is set to become a CFL unrestricted free agent February 15, and many in the football world expect the all-star slotback to test the waters of free agency. That group also includes Saskatchewan Roughriders general manager Brendan Taman.
Local scuttlebutt is predicting that if Fantuz is not back trying to crack an NFL lineup, that he will attempt to move closer to home, potentially to Toronto or Hamilton, to play this season.
The current options for Andy Fantuz include staying with the Roughriders, moving to another CFL team, or trying to crack an NFL roster. Although last year’s attempt to make the Chicago Bears was unsuccessful, it appears the NFL still might hold priority for Fantuz as he reportedly was a among a group of CFL players to work out for the Jacksonville Jaguars in early January.
Last season, Fantuz battled injuries after returning to Saskatchewan, cutting his production from a CFL high 1,380 yards in 2010, down to 175-yards in 2011. Fantuz had no touchdowns in 2011.
