Maroon Cup Oldtimers Tournament Ready to Go This Weekend
The Chatham Maroon Oldtimers Hockey Association is hosting its 11th Maroon Cup tournament this Thursday through Sunday at Thames Campus Arena.
Nineteen oldtimer teams from across the region will take part in the tournament, which features three divisions of players 35-years and older and two divisions of over-50s.
Local teams include the Chatham-Kent Kings, Friday Night Lites, Elderkings, PreferredBuilding, Hounds, Ridgetown Outlaws, Maple City Oldtimers, Merlin Aces, Mike’s Moving, Dresden Dukes, Ridgetown Hoskins plus the Oungah Oldhawks Over-35s and over-50s.
Games begin at 6 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, 8 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The five championship games take place on Sunday starting at 1 p.m.
The Maroon Oldtimers use the tournament as their vehicle to raise funds for the community.
Since the first Maroon Cup in 1992, the Maroon Oldtimers have donated over $50,000 into the community to numerous charitable organizations.
The Chatham-Kent School Breakfast Program is the primary beneficiary for this year’s tournament. Several other worthy causes will receive financial support in the near future.
The Maroon Cup has supported organizations such as the Chatham-Kent School Breakfast Program, Meals On Wheels, Kent Kids Foundation, Chatham-Kent Children’s SafetyVillage, Chatham-Kent Association for Community Living, Transition House and Special Population Chatham-Kent in past tournaments.
The club has also provided financial support to local athletic programs such as Chatham Minor Hockey, Chatham Girls Minor Hockey, Chatham Sledgehammers Hockey, Chatham-Kent High School Hockey, Chatham Minor Baseball, Chatham Youth Soccer, the Chatham-Kent Community Athletic Complex and the Chatham Sports Hall Of Fame.
Funds are raised through various means at the tournament, including an Elimination Draw and Silent Auction, plus food and beverage sales.
The public is invited to attend the tournament and take part in the draws and silent auction.
Some of the major items in the auction include signed jerseys of the Calgary Flames’ T.J. Brodie, Edmonton Oilers’ Sam Gagner and Detroit Red Wings’ Pavel Datsyuk plus tickets to NHL and OHL games.
The Maroon Cup is traditionally held in mid-January the Maroon Oldtimers moved it to February to accommodate the various ice-time users who lost several weekend over the last two months due to minor hockey tournaments and playoffs, plus with Christmas and New Year’s falling on weekends.
The tournament is held every two years.
