Sharks Head Up Class at Great Lakes Award Banquet

For the second year in a row, the Wheatley Sharks were at the head of the class for the annual Great Lakes Junior C Awards Banquet.

Whealey Sharks captain Kurtis Ouellette was named the league’s top defenseman, an honour he also held last season.

Riley Babkirk, who led the Sharks in scoring this season with 27 goals and 17 assists for 44 points was named the Great Lakes rookie of the year.

Another Chatham-Kent team, the Blenheim Blades had their coaching staff honoured, as the top coaching staff in the Junior C loop. Bob McNear served as the head coach of the Blenheim Blades this season, while Bill Miletic, Pete Knights, Paul Warriner, and Todd Warriner served as assistants.

Blenheim finished atop the North Division standings this season with 47-points after finishing second last overall last season, collecting only 28-points.

Mooretown Flags forward Jeff Schroeter was named league MVP, an award that must be given to a player who is not in his overage season. Zakk Olvin of the Belle River Canadiens was the league’s top goalie, while Kris Wojnarowski of the Essex 73’s was named volunteer of the year.
