Basketball Wallaceburg Goes Mining For Medals
Basketball Wallaceburg has produced some of Southwestern Ontario’s top young female basketball players in recent years, and if the organization’s success this year at the Ontario Cup Provincial Championships is any indication, that trend will continue for some time.
Over the weekend, the Basketball Wallaceburg U12 Major Atom won Ontario bronze, and U11 Atom Girls won a Provincial Silver medal.
In the U11 Atom Girls championships, the Basketball Wallaceburg girls surprised several teams, entering the Division IV tournament ranked 6th before walking away with the silver medal.
Wallaceburg opened their tournament Saturday morning defeating the North Toronto Huskies 24-14. Later that afternoon, Wallaceburg edged the Brantford Briers 32-20 to advance to the championship side of the tournament, facing the Flamborough Fire in the semi-finals. In another hard fought battle, Wallaceburg managed to defeat Flamborough 26-21.
In the final, although the Wallaceburg girls played hard, they were defeated, giving them the silver medal, 32-22 by the Port Colborne Hornets.
The U12 Major Atom Girls took home a Division IV bronze medal from their provincial tournament in Mississauga this past weekend.
In the round robin, Wallaceburg opened with a 35-15 win over the Orillia Lakers Friday night. Saturday, the Basketball Wallaceburg U12 girls continued their strong play defeating the York South Silver Knights 40-30. In their final round robin game, the Guelph Phoenix, the tournaments eventual silver medalists, needed double overtime to defeat the Wallaceburg girls 38-33.
Advancing to the semi-finals with a 2-1 record, Wallaceburg lost a heartbreaker, 24-22 to the Flamborough Fire, sending the team to the bronze medal game. Facing the North Region Crazy Cats in the bronze medal game, the U12 Basketball Wallaceburg girls dominated a defensive match up taking home the hardware with a 29-18 victory.
