Over the weekend the Ontario Winter Games were held in Collingwood, featuring 24 sports, one of which was boys and girls volleyball. Chatham’s Josh Reding played for the Region 3 White team taking home a gold medal.

Reding, a John McGregor Secondary School Student, who plays club volleyball for the Chatham Ballhawks called the experience amazing, and a once in a lifetime opportunity,

“Winning the gold at the Ontario Winter Games was a feeling like no other,” said Reding. “Having the opportunity to be with such an awesome team, against so many other competitive regions was amazing. It was unbelievable with how coordinated and professional everything seemed, in this once in a lifetime opportunity.”

After finishing 2nd in pool play, the Region 3 team put together stunning upsets on the final day, including a win over Region 6 (Ottawa) featuring Prime Minister Harper’s son. Harper was in attendance for the final.

Region 3 and Reding also defeated first place Region 5 Red (Toronto) in the semi-final 26-24,25-21.

Reding’s Region 3 team was led by head coach Clarke Mathany, who was a setter for the UCC Lancers in high school before playing University volleyball for Guelph.
