March is Nutrition Month: Get a Real Deal On Your Meal

Myth or Fact: I need to avoid carbs if I want to lose weight.

If you guessed myth – you are correct! Yes, you may lose some weight after cutting carbohydrates from your diet, but this is often because you are eating less food. Carbohydrates are found in foods such as, whole grain breads, cereals, oatmeal, pasta, barley, fruit, vegetables and beans. These foods are a very important source of energy for our bodies and brain. Cutting out foods, such as breads, cereals, pasta and fruit can leave you bored and unhappy with your food choices, not to mention cranky. Next time you think about removing carbohydrates from your diet, focus instead on your portion sizes and healthier choices. For example, choose whole grain breads over enriched white breads. The best way to reach your healthy weight is to eat a variety of foods from the four food groups from Canada’s Food Guide. This is also the best plan for a healthy lifestyle.
