Minor Atom Cyclones Drop Nailbiter in Alliance Final Opener, See Photo Gallery
The Chatham-Kent Cyclones Minor Atom ‘AAA’ team dropped a nailbiter to the Sun County Panthers in game one of their Alliance Hockey Championship series 2-1 at Memorial Arena Saturday afternoon.
After falling behind 1-0, Craig Spence shovelled home the tying goal for the Cyclones late in the second period. Sam McKinlay picked up the lone assist on the goal.
With roughly 3 minutes remaining in the game however, Sun County would walk into the Chatham-Kent slot and fire a high wrister over the shoulder of Cyclones goalie Aiden Lucyk, who was solid in net for the home team.
Much of this Chatham-Kent Cyclones team playing for the Alliance ‘AAA’ championship were a part of last year’s Major Novice Chatham Maroons ‘AA’ OMHA championship team. The team, the youngest entry for the Chatham-Kent Cyclones, is comprised of a mix of players from Chatham as well as several from rural Chatham-Kent, including 4 from Tilbury, and 1 player from Wallaceburg, as well as others from Essex county.
Chatham-Kent eliminated the London Jr. Knights Gold, and Waterloo Wolves on their way to the Alliance Final. Game 2 will be played Sunday in Essex, followed by game 3 March 21 back at Memorial Arena at 7:30pm.
